Draw Birmingham - The Bullring

First attempt at the bullring, I used silver foil and silver mesh to make the outside of the Bullring and this was built into layers under acetate. I like the 3d effect that layering gives and it emphasises the distinct organic shape the building has. The sketch below is a watercolour ink sketch of the inside of the Bullring, I tried to get the perspective right, This was watercoloured using leftover coffee instead of water!

Living in the center of Birmingham I thought it would be helpful if I could draw the view from my studio - and it was! I think i'll do another one of these but from the other window and to mix it up a bit i'll draw the view using the shape of the window as the frame of the picture - just because i really like the shape of 'em! I think the proportions off in places on this pic but if I wanted perfect proportions I would take a photo!

This image was traced onto acetate from a photo taken on my camera. I then added watercolour on separate paper beneath the acetate line drawing. I changed the levels in photoshop too to make the watercolour darker so the shadows were more visible.

Draw Birmingham Project - St. Martins Church

I'm planning to make an illustrated travel book for Birmingham students and tourists to help them get to know Birmingham the way I do. It's going to have fun cartoons of Birmingham life aswell as more formal drawings of landmarks like the one pictured: An ink and watercolour study of St. Martins church, i've drawn this church once before and its great to draw and near Starbucks so I can have a coffee and draw! My technique for this drawing was to trace the outline of the building by sight as i hold a piece of acetate up to the building, this allowed me to get the proportions and perspective spot on so I could then trace that and add the details and colour separately.

A Shared Heart

This is an experiment I tried printing onto acetate and painting on the back of the line drawing with gouache. I then chose a pink paper as the background and the heart shape was added after in photoshop. The design of the drawing is based on art nouveaux paintings.

"Don't Be Wasteful" book

Each colour had to be printed out seperately on the risograph.

We printed the "Don't Be Wasteful" book yesterday and it looks really good, I think I channelled my inner graphic designer as the book is heavily editorial based! This project dealt with traditional print, letterpress for the front cover and digital print using a risograph for the pages inside. We printed 40 copies so if anyone wants to have a copy email me and i'll send you one!

Self Portrait

This is a self portrait for the front cover of my rcc. I took the inspiration from R. Crumbs "Yeah, But Is It Art?" book as I think the irony that he conveys in the cover is clever. I started with a photo taken of me in a similar pose to R. Crumb wearing my Brian jumper and Stewie world domination slippers. From the photo I blue pencilled a simple outline of the photo. I decided to work in a similar way to Crumb using transparency paper I inked the blue pencil outline and cut out separate coloured card to match the shape of the sofa and jeans. I watercoloured onto white paper for the rest of the details and pasted it all (making sure it lined up with the ink drawing) onto a watercolour paper wash background. This gave me solid colour where I needed it and textured watercolour also where I needed it. It was fiddly to register everything up but I am more than happy with the result!

Mad Max process

Here is a parody of the Mad Max film poster I got the idea from Viz' film poster calendar. Each stage used a separate piece of paper the rough pencil in a sketchbook, the inking on bristol board, half the size I usually work, then edited in photoshop then coloured on watercolour paper. I experimented by using masking fluid over the figure so the background watercolour wash wouldn't affect the way the figure stands out.

Booze Britain

Inspired by Adam Dant's 'Booze Britain' exhibition in Walsall art gallery last year I went on to produce this piece. It wouldn't have been here if it wasn't for my girlfriend who drove me round half the pubs in Birmingham to get 'research' - I treated her to a drink aswell! I also used a helpful tutorial I found in Computer Arts magazine about digital inking and colouring in Illustrator.

For me, this piece has a Family Guy feel to it which I love! It combines the Britishness of boozing and has a 'cheeky' (pun intended) theme. This project was fun to do and I learnt how interesting the meanings are behind some of the British pubs!

Millions of Ways to eat Millions!

I worked as the illustrator for this project, working in collaboration with animators and graphic designers to produce advertising for the 'Millions' sweet. As a group we made a fully animated advert and advertising posters, magazine page adverts and direct mail advertising. As the illustrator I was responsible for storyboarding the final advert, which went through quite a few changes.

To begin with the advert was going to use the original characters found on the website on a space mission to collect the millions from a planet. We all decided in a group meeting that we needed to go for a different angle using the potential the sweet has to be eaten in many different ways - 'Millions of Ways to eat Millions.'From then on I literally did 'Millions' of drawings of characters eating the millions sweets. We then selected which drawings would be used for the final posters and they were inked and coloured.

The pictures you see are from the exhibition of the group work and my character sheet and final storyboard are also shown. I will post the final video so you can see the finished result. It was one of the best experiences in terms of working as a team to produce a creative output and I would love to do something like this again!

Godman Theme Park

Here are more watercolour experiments. The one on the left is based on the poster for Blanche Fury which has great atmosphere and I replaced gargoyles on the gate posts with Godman with a rather long tongue and a rather embarrased cherub looking at him. This is the first drawing after being inspired to design a Godman themepark. This leads me on to the next drawing - A Stairway to Heaven, this drawing is also based on the poster design but would be a good name for a ride in the Godman themepark. I am also working on a wallpaper or background design for a repeating map style pattern for my website which I will post on here soon...

The other page is a cartoon based on an article I read in the Metro based on methods Nazi's would use to poison their enemy. The other image is a doodle of toe warmers based on a conversation with Kerry from uni!

I bought two notebooks to replace my last one. A Gustav Klimt red notebook and a squared blue line notebook which i'll use for doing sketches and comics in blue pencil. Got them from papernation.com they have a good selection!

This is a page done for a comic club I'm in. The idea is we each produce a page of comic or two and pass it on to the next person to draw their page. The stories are my favourite element to this as there is no script to follow and each person makes it up according to the last page etc.. this often allows for interesting and very funny results!!

Here's a picture I did of Eva Mendes. I did it in anticipation of The Spirit coming out in the cinema. As I wasn't able to get to the cinema the first week of it's release and its sudden disappearance from the box office means I'll have to anticipate it a bit longer till it comes out on DVD!
